11 Things to Do Around Checkpoint Charlie That Aren’t Checkpoint Charlie
We all know why people come to Checkpoint Charlie. Most of us have probably stopped by for that very reason ourselves. But what many visitors don’t realize is that the area around it offers so much more. If you’ve got some extra time after visiting, or you’re looking for something to do while your history-loving travel buddies dive deep into Cold War stories, here are 11 things nearby that have nothing to do with history:
1. Taste one of Berlin’s most iconic cups of coffee at The Barn
Known worldwide for its specialty coffee, The Barn started as a small roastery in Berlin and has grown into an institution. It’s the perfect spot for a caffeine boost and a taste of Berlin’s third-wave coffee culture.

6. Have Berlin’s OG Chinese noodles at LIU 成都味道面馆 Nudelhaus
This bustling Sichuan spot is famous for bold flavors and serious heat. Don’t expect toned-down “European spiciness” here. The noodles come exactly as they should: fiery and authentic.
7. Go to Chocolaterie heaven at Rausch Schokoladenhaus
Just a short walk away, this family-run chocolate house is a Berlin classic. With impressive chocolate sculptures, a café, and a shop filled with pralines and treats, it’s paradise for anyone with a sweet tooth.

8. Browse the Berlinische Galerie and its legendary Design Shop
The Berlinische Galerie is one of the city’s leading museums for modern art, photography, and architecture. Even if you decide to skip the exhibitions this time, its design shop alone is worth a visit. Packed with art books, prints, and unique design objects, it’s a great place to find thoughtful souvenirs or simply get inspired.
9. Have Drinks with a view at Mondrian Suites Rooftop
End your mini tour with a drink overlooking the city. The rooftop at Mondrian Suites near Checkpoint Charlie offers a relaxed atmosphere and a great vantage point to watch the sunset over Berlin’s skyline. Just make sure to come on a sunny day.
10. Go back in time at Verflixt & Zugespielt
This cozy game shop is a paradise for board game lovers. Browse shelves stacked with classics and new releases, and let yourself be transported back to the joy of game nights before smartphones took over.

11. Hunt for hidden gems at Charlie’s Treasures Berlin
Part antique shop, part local hangout, this place is all about discovering hidden treasures. Even the best antiquing may not be enough to find this shop's greatest treasure of all, though. Only with some luck, will Charlie himself reveal it and accompany your visit with his DJ skills.
So, while Checkpoint Charlie may draw the crowds to this little part of Berlin-Kreuzberg, this list shows that there is plenty to experience beyond the history books.
Come for the history, stay for everything else.
