ARTIST

Rutger de Vries

Rutger de Vries (Zwolle, NL, 1987) is a Berlin-based painter who investigates the relationship between man and machine by outsourcing the act of painting to self-developed "painting-machines." De Vries earned his BA in Graphic Design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and his MA at Werkplaats Typografie in Arnhem, developing unique artistic tools throughout his studies. He completed a two-year artist residency at Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten Amsterdam in 2017 and received the Buning Brongers painting prize in 2018. His works are included in prestigious collections: the Rijksoverheid Kunstcollectie, the NN Art Collection, and private collections across AT/DE/FR/GB/JP/NL. Het Nieuwe Instituut Rotterdam and Amsterdam's historic Diamond Exchange Capital C have commissioned permanent installations. Recent exhibitions include Knotenpunkt Festival Hamburg, Lille Art Up!, Big Art, and Art Rotterdam. De Vries exhibits internationally and has served as guest tutor at the University of the Arts Bremen and Frank Mohr Institute Groningen.
