Portrait of Artist Harif Guzman at Notagallery in Berlin-Kreuzberg

ARTIST

Harif Guzman

Harif Guzman (Venezuela,1975) is an artist shaped by perpetual movement. Following his father from Venezuela to Colombia, Puerto Rico, New York, and Fort Lauderdale, and eventually traveling to California's coast alone, Guzman's work reflects influences from multiple traditions. Beginning his practice in the 1990s, Guzman developed his craft across San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York's skating scenes. He settled in New York, though nomadic restlessness continues permeating his work. An artist of extremes, he unites skate culture with fine art, found objects with fresh concepts. Guzman's transformation of humble materials parallels his evolution from an immigrant homeless skater to internationally recognized artist. Extending Kurt Schwitters' collage traditions, his found object work recalls Rauschenberg and Basquiat. From eroticized paintings to LED-lit collages, politicized sculptures, and New York street murals, his art fuses Pop and street aesthetics with subversive humor.
