Christian Werner (Berlin, 1977) is a Berlin-based photographer whose work cultural critic Adriano Sack calls "among the most exciting that contemporary German photography has to offer." Since the late 1990s, he has been integral to the city's cultural landscape. Werner specializes in portraiture, photographing celebrities like Billie Eilish, M.I.A., Bret Easton Ellis, and Susan Sarandon for publications including 032c, Harper's Bazaar, Interview, and ZEITmagazin. His thematic books offer sensitive explorations of pop-cultural history, balancing stark observation with wit and poetic sensibility. LOS ANGELES (Korbinian Verlag) presents a dystopian homage to the city, while STILLLEBEN BRD (Kerber Verlag) captures post-war Catholic interiors that were later exhibited at the Bröhan Museum. "BONN. DAS ATLANTIS DER BRD" (Matthes & Seitz) documents the former capital's abandoned power sites. Werner's photography has been featured in notable exhibitions including Berlin Views at C/O Galerie (2024) and Erase & Rewind at Die Möglichkeit einer Insel (2022). As Süddeutsche Zeitung observes, his subjects exist "simultaneously in both the present moment and the past," revealing "a turning point in our civilization."
