Sven Marquardt (East Berlin,1962) is a Berlin-based photographer whose work combines formal severity with bleak impermanence, creating striking monochrome contrasts that capture the city's ever-changing character. As Christoph Tannert noted, "Every picture by Sven Marquardt heralds the start of autumn". Marquardt was integral to the emerging punk and New Wave scene in Prenzlauer Berg during the mid-1980s. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall, he paused photography to immerse himself in the reunited city's nightclub culture. His role as doorman at Ostgut club profoundly influenced his artistic focus on nocturnal subjects, leading to his current position at Berghain since 2004 and involvement with Ostgut Ton record label from 2007. His publications include Zukünftig Vergangen (2010), Heiland, Wild Verschlossen (Mitteldeutscher Verlag), and autobiography Die Nacht ist Leben (2014, Ullstein Extra). Marquardt's photography captures Berlin's unusual humanity through his unique insider perspective on the city's underground culture.
