The first time I visited Berlin was with my parents, back in the late 1980s. We came from the sleepy West German provinces and stayed in a small hotel at the far end of the Ku’damm.
Every day we walked past Wolf Vostell’s brand-new concrete Cadillac sculpture. It was bold and strange and felt like the future — I was completely fascinated. From then on, I couldn’t wait to live in that magnetic, burning city called Berlin.
In time, the promise of that place became real. Still, every time I pass Rathenauplatz, I think back to that first moment — the spark that started it all.
