Christian Werner
Marlboro Man
The Marlboro Cowboy, Philip Morris’s iconic advertising figure, still sits atop the roof of the cigarette factory in Neukölln. During the years of Germany’s division and West Berlin’s insular status, several major factories established themselves here. Their presence was closely tied to the city’s unique situation: they not only ensured practical supply, but also formed part of a broader political strategy to present West Berlin as a “showcase of the West,” stocked with every imaginable consumer good, directly in front of the GDR’s eyes. And even today, Werner still catch myself falling for that promise of freedom with which cigarettes were once sold to the people.
