The artwork 'Little Girl No. 12' by Meng Yang Yang is a painting crafted in 2006 with oil on canvas.

Born in China in 1983, Meng Yang Yang graduated from Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, one of China's most prestigious art schools in 2009. Currently, she lives and works in Shanghai. Starting from 2007 she he did major solo exhibitions in Shanghai, China and London, UK. Her style is unique: Her paintings often feature dreamlike, surreal imagery, blending elements of fantasy with a strong sense of narrative and emotion. Meng's work is characterized by its vibrant color palette and intricate details, inviting viewers into her imaginative world. Influenced by both traditional Chinese art and contemporary Western styles, Meng's art bridges cultural and artistic divides, offering a fresh perspective on modern issues and timeless human experiences.

One of his most acclaimed series, these works were created as part of Meng Yang Yang’s ongoing ‘Girl Series’. Challenging the social realist aesthetics that once dominated Chinese art, Yang Yang distorts and trivializes the human form in his work. Drawing inspiration from the New Wave Movement—an avant-garde response to the Socialist Realism that prevailed in China since the 1950s—Yang Yang abandons idealistic figurative representation in favor of creating humorous, yet mutated, figures. His art reflects a critical reaction to the Cultural Revolution, a period marked by stringent artistic restrictions and the prohibition of such expressive forms. The movement embraced and encouraged creative freedom and an abandonment of traditional artistic conventions.
