Home-Less, Vika, Minsk.

I will lay on this grass

I will swim in those waters

I will sleep on this bed

I have never been here before

But my body will make it my home

My home is imprinted in me:

In my eyes, I keep the forest where I played as a kid,

In my fingers—my favorite corner of the street,

In my thighs—the softness of my mother’s bed.

—What’s left when the home is lost?

—Me.

She called her hometown, Minsk—the capital of Belarus—“the city of the golden swamp.” It felt empty; many had left after the revolution against dictatorship was brutally repressed. Her brother forged a sword while in exile for activism—an attempt to reclaim the power that had been taken away by the state. She stood in her brother’s backyard, holding the sword against the westering sun—a moment of family bonding before the long goodbye.

Home-Less visually explores the instability of the human condition and perception, examining the complexities of identity, belonging, and the lasting impact of political events. Initially conceived between 2017 and 2020, the project focuses on the stories of young women who have since been displaced from their native lands. Shot in Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus before the full-scale invasion, Home-Less intertwines powerful nostalgic imagery with reflections on the intricate relationship between place and identity. Over time, it has evolved into an exploration not only of the bond between individuals and their homelands but also of the loss of that connection—the inability to experience the feelings associated with “home.”
