When it comes to women’s bodies and the admiration thereof, there is often goddess and worship imagery invoked. “I worship at your feet,” etc. When you place a human on a pedestal, you remove their humanity. You distance yourself from their flaws, you project an identity onto them, leaving them vulnerable to dismantling. It’s not something asked for, or collaborated on by the person on the pedestal. And if you build a pedestal and put someone on it, it’s very tempting and easy to knock it down. Rejecting this narrative, embracing the humanity of the subject, and insisting on it through direct eye contact challenge the direct objectification of the viewer and force relationship between them and the subject, a direct acknowledgement that even though photography is inherently objectifying, we’re fighting that through her gaze, similar to titian’s venus of urbino. She challenges the free gaze of the viewer.
