Come and get your good fruit, woman
In the Renaissance, similarly to today, there was a tendency to insinuate genitalia through the use of food and fruit, though women were not considered capable of understanding or noticing the joke or relationship. There is a plate manufactured in the Umbrian town in the early 16th century that seems to reference this directly, with a woman with a basket of phallic fruits and written above her in Latin, “come get your good fruit, woman.” To turn this on its head, acknowledging that women do indeed get the joke and are similarly capable of producing the joke, the subject here is surrounded by fruits that make her think of her own and her partner’s body - yonic metaphors abound. The same title is now a pun intended for women, and a direct reference to the subject’s queerness.
