Max Grote

Max Grote, a Berlin based artist, takes great pleasure in playing chess- that’s why he depicts it. Since the age of 5 he has been playing that game and in his art Max wants to explore his obsession with the game of chess and what it means to him personally. For the most part he works with oil paint, clay and 3D Print in his studies at Kunsthochschule Berlin Weissensee.

„I see the theme „Time is running out“ in more of a playful context because chess is usually played with a time limit. That time limit always determines the nature of the game varying from very slow play involving a lot of thinking to an extraordinary fast play woth pieces flying all over the place. Also if your time had run out, you lose the game.“
